Transplanting Tomatoes

The tomato seedlings planted in January are outgrowing their little six-packs so we've started the process of transplanting them to bigger pots.

Decided to transplant a flat of 72, mostly because that's all the shelf space I have under the grow-lights. Some will probably be going straight into the ground this week as our expected temps. are pretty encouraging (80 degrees by Friday).

Mixed up some potting soil with a bit of leftover seed-starting medium....

...and planted some in picnic cups, while others went into saved nursery pots.

This year I shall try to keep tags in their pots to avoid the seemingly inevitable mystery tomatoes.

ps. check out the wonderful soup I made with garden goodies:)

Yours are bigger than mine by a long shot. I should have started in January instead of March. How long will it take you to clear the beds for planting?

Just found your blog and look forward to following along. I just started growing my own last year and hope to increase to even more this year.

Ours may be a bit TOO big Kris, they could probably be going in the ground right now, but I think it's still a bit too soon.....plus there's that whole 'knee high weed' issue....sigh.

Thanks all for the comments, and ONG....glad you are along for the ride!

72?! That was me last year. I've calmed down a bit and only have 16 tomatoes to make room for the summer of corn.

Do you think that if you started a tomato from seed in the garden today that it would catch up with those you started in January? I wonder if it's even worth all the trouble. I'm considering relaxing more January - March 2012.
